Schematics, circuits, PCBs and veroboards for guitar effects pedals.
The Eighteen is a guitar pedal that is based on the Marshall 18W amplifier circuit. This circuit was used in a few amps introduced by Marshall in the 1960s and was known for its superior sound quality compared to other small amps. The Eighteen recreates the normal channel of the 18W amp, with features including two channels with Volume and Tone controls, Tremolo on one channel, and an optional Reverb.
The pedal uses FETs (Field-Effect Transistors) in place of tubes to achieve its distortion sound. It has one preamp stage, a volume and unique tone control setup, a phase splitter, and a single power stage. There is no negative feedback in the circuit, making it easier to achieve distortion. The components used in the pedal may not look typical for a Marshall, but they produce similar results to the sound clips of the original amp.
Possible modifications for the Eighteen pedal include using 1M pots for Volume and Tone controls instead of the specified 500k pots. Adding a treble bleed cap to the Volume control can brighten the amp’s sound, with 220pF being a good starting point. Experimenting with different JFETs (using sockets) in any or all positions can also yield different tones. Additionally, changing the values of the 4n7 and 10n caps on the Tone control can alter the response of the pedal.
