Based On: VFE Vintage Distortion

Alpha Dog by Madbeanpedals

The Alpha Dog is a distortion pedal by VFE that is based on the ProCo Rat. It offers several tweaks to expand the tonal range of distortion. The controls on the pedal include:

1. LEVEL: This is a simple output volume control that acts as a passive attenuator to control the signal level.

2. FILTER: This control adjusts the treble cut. Turning it up adds bite and grit, while pulling it back smooths out the tone or creates a darker tone.

3. GAIN: This control sets the gain of the LM308N op amp. More gain means more volume, distortion, and sustain. It has a smooth sweep from light-gain overdrive to raging fuzz-stortion.

4. FAT: This control boosts gain and bottom end. Turning it up adds a full-range gain boost, creating a thick modern drive tone.

5. SOFT: This control uses Variable HCC circuitry to set the drive character of the op amp. Turning it counterclockwise adds asymmetrical germanium sweetening, while turning it clockwise adds dynamic, smooth mosfet drive. At 12:00, no clipping is added.

6. HARD: This control uses Variable HCC circuitry to set the drive character of the post-gain stage. Turning it counterclockwise adds dynamic twin stacked silicon distortion, while turning it clockwise adds vintage distortion bite with compression and sustain. At 12:00, no clipping is added.

The Variable HCC circuitry allows for fine-tuning of harmonics, compression, and clipping character of the tone.
