Aquaboy Deluxe by Madbeanpedals

The 2019 version of the Aquaboy Deluxe is a redesigned version of the 2015 project. It includes features that were requested in the previous version, such as 15v operation, an onboard charge pump, and both true bypass and tails footswitches. The pedal has a delay time of about 550ms and offers modulation options with triangle and squarewave shapes.

This project is complex and not recommended for novice builders. It is also a costly project, with the BBD chips, clock, and compander alone costing around $50. However, investing in this project will result in a unique and professional-sounding delay pedal that is still cheaper than many commercially available analog delays with similar features.

Please note that the Xvive MN3005 re-makes, which are required for this project, are currently out of stock at smallbear. It may take some time to obtain them. There are no sources for NOS MN3005 chips available. Hopefully, smallbear will restock the re-makes soon.

To properly set up the Aquaboy Deluxe, you will need a multimeter, audio probe, and some kind of testing rig or breadboard setup.

The controls on the pedal include:

– DELAY: Adjusts the total amount of signal delay from slapback to approximately 500ms.
– FDBK: Controls the number and intensity of delay repeats, ranging from one to infinite/self-oscillation.
– MIX: Adjusts the level of the delay signal relative to the dry guitar signal.
– RATE: Sets the speed of the delay modulation, from slowest to very fast.
– DEPTH: Controls the intensity of the modulation, ranging from moderate to extreme.
– MOD: A DPDT switch that allows you to choose between square, no modulation, and triangle modulation.

There are also trimmers on the pedal:

– T1: Sets the maximum amount of feedback possible, controlling the total range of the FDBK control.
– BIAS1, BIAS2: Used to set the biasing point on the input of each BBD.
– CANCEL: Adjusts the mix of the two outputs on BBD2.
– CLOCK: Sets the lower limit of the clock frequency used to drive the BBD chips.
