Schematics, circuits, PCBs and veroboards for guitar effects pedals.
The Argent Silicon Fuzz is a highly sought-after pedal that is based on the BOSS FZ-3 Fuzz, which was released in 1997 and discontinued shortly after. Despite its short lifespan, the FZ-3 has become a collector’s item, often selling for $250 or more. Notable musicians such as John Frusciante and Billy Corgan have used this pedal.
While the FZ-3 was marketed as a successor to the FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz, the two circuits have no similarities in tone or underlying circuitry. The FZ-3 is loosely based on the classic Fuzz Face and Tone Bender circuits, while the FZ-2 is derived from the Superfuzz with added features.
In the past, there have been attempts to trace the FZ-3 circuit, but they contained incorrect values and did not produce a usable fuzz effect. However, in 2021, Aion FX successfully traced a third unit and created an accurate schematic, resulting in the creation of the Argent, the first faithful clone of the FZ-3.
The Argent retains the original circuit of the FZ-3 with no modifications or substitutions, except for the conversion to true bypass. The type of input JFET used in the pedal is not crucial, but Aion FX offers the 2SK209-GR pre-soldered to through-hole adapter PCBs as an option.
Overall, the Argent Silicon Fuzz is a highly sought-after pedal that faithfully recreates the unique fuzz tones of the BOSS FZ-3, making it a valuable addition to any guitarist’s pedalboard.
