The Argus Silicon Fuzz takes inspiration from the unique fuzz section of the Roland AD-50 Double Beat pedal. The AD-50 was originally released in 1973 and featured a combination fuzz-wah design. While the fuzz and wah circuits were independent, the fuzz section was never released separately.
The standout feature of the AD-50 fuzz is the 3-position “wave shape” selector. This selector allows the user to filter the signal in different ways, resulting in three distinct wave shapes: square, sine, and triangle. Each wave shape offers a different tonal characteristic.
The square wave mode provides a full-frequency sound with heavy clipping and low dynamics, which is the classic fuzz tone. This mode is what sets fuzz apart from overdrive or distortion. The sine wave mode produces a rounded and balanced sound, similar to a natural instrument, with a focus on the midrange and less emphasis on bass and treble. The triangle wave mode, however, is described as piercing, brittle, and treble-heavy.
During the prototyping process of the Argus Silicon Fuzz, it was discovered that the triangle (treble) mode of the AD-50 was virtually unusable. To address this, the Argus offers the option to replace the triangle mode with a mid-scoop mode. This mid-scoop mode provides a center frequency around 1kHz, similar to the tone control position of a Big Muff pedal. While it may not have a catchy wave shape description like the other two modes, it offers a much more practical and useful tone option.
In addition to the wave shape selector, the Argus Silicon Fuzz includes two additional controls. The Input level control functions similarly to turning down the volume knob on a guitar, allowing the user to adjust the input level of the fuzz. The Body control blends between a small and large input capacitor, which affects the amount of bass going into the clipping stage. These additional controls, along with the mid-scoop mode, make the Argus a more versatile fuzz pedal compared to the original AD-50.
Overall, the Argus Silicon Fuzz takes inspiration from the unique wave shape selector of the Roland AD-50 Double Beat pedal and adds additional features to enhance its versatility.
