The Artemis Preamp Drive Mk. II is a versatile pedal that captures the essence of the Ampeg SVT bass amplifiers. It can be used for both bass and guitar and blurs the line between a preamp and an overdrive pedal.
The pedal is designed to be reactive to the signal that comes before it, making it ideal for placing after other drive pedals but before modulation effects. However, it can also be used as a standalone overdrive pedal.
The Artemis Preamp Drive Mk. II is an adaptation of the second version of the Catalinbread SFT, which was originally released in 2016. It features the “Stones/Stoner” switch, which re-voices the tone and increases the gain, pushing it into fuzz territory.
The pedal uses MPF4393 JFETs, which are no longer produced. However, Aion FX sells the original MPF4393s in sets of 6, which are required for this circuit. The PCB also has an extra pad that allows for the use of surface-mount JFETs (MMBF4393), which are still in production and perform identically to the ones used in Catalinbread pedals.
Overall, the Artemis Preamp Drive Mk. II is a powerful and versatile pedal that captures the iconic sound of the Ampeg SVT bass amplifiers. Whether used as a preamp or an overdrive pedal, it delivers a wide range of tones and is suitable for both bass and guitar players.
