The Azimuth Dynamic Overdrive is a faithful recreation of the Hermida Zendrive, a highly regarded pedal known for its ability to replicate the tone of Dumble amplifiers. Lovepedal took over the production of the Zendrive in 2013 and made only minor changes to the circuit, primarily replacing the op-amp.
The Zendrive can be thought of as a simplified version of the Tube Screamer. It features a standard Tube Screamer-style clipping section, followed by a variable R-C treble cut and a buffer. The “Voice” control allows for adjustment of the bass frequencies by altering the corner frequency of the filter coming off the op-amp. Interestingly, increasing the Voice control also increases the available gain.
Despite its legendary status, the Zendrive circuit has a relatively low parts count, making it an excellent choice for beginners looking to build their own pedals. Aion FX recommends the Azimuth Dynamic Overdrive as a great starting point for new builders due to its simplicity and the popularity of the Zendrive’s tone among blues guitarists and fans of Dumble amplifiers.
