The Beta Preamp pedal is a faithful recreation of the Sunn® Beta Lead and Beta Bass amplifiers, known for their unique overdriven CMOS stages for drive tone. Originally released in 1979, these amps were highly regarded for their distinctive sound.
The Beta Preamp pedal is designed to capture the essence of the original amplifier in a compact pedal format. It can be configured for either bass or guitar by simply swapping out a few components. While it can be used as a standalone drive pedal, it truly shines when used as a preamp, directly driving a power amp.
To make the pedal more convenient for modern use, the supply voltage has been reduced to +/-9V, allowing it to be powered by a standard 9V power supply. In the original amplifier, the drive tone was generated by CMOS hex inverters running on a reduced 8V single-supply. By maintaining this aspect of the circuit, the heart of the distortion tone remains true to the original design.
Despite the slightly reduced voltage, all other active components in the pedal perform just as they would in the original amplifier. There is still plenty of headroom available, ensuring that the pedal delivers the same powerful and dynamic tone as its predecessor.
Whether you’re a guitarist or a bassist, the Beta Preamp pedal offers a versatile and authentic recreation of the Sunn® Beta Lead and Beta Bass amplifiers. Experience the unique overdriven CMOS stages and capture the classic drive tone of these legendary amps in a compact and convenient pedal.
