Bloodletter by Unsound Circuity

Bloodletter is an homage to the iconic Boss HM-2 by Unsound Circuity. It serves as both a faithful clone and an enhanced alternative to the legendary HM-2, appealing to chainsaw enthusiasts and those seeking a versatile distortion pedal.

Key Features:

  • Enhanced Tonality: Bloodletter offers a brighter base tone and increased presence compared to the HM-2, even at maximum settings.
  • Natural Distortion: It delivers a more natural, less fuzzy distortion texture, enhancing the overall feel.
  • Precise Controls: Bloodletter provides fine-tuned control over Volume, Gain, High, and Low settings.
  • Mid Control: An additional Mid control allows users to modify mid-frequency content without compromising the chainsaw-like tone.
  • Blend Control: An added Blend control ensures transparency in tone blending.
  • Response Switch: A 3-way Response switch alters the tone between Thick, Raw, or Sharp positions.

Design Choices: Bloodletter’s design emphasizes ease of modification for experienced users. It employs conventional opamp topologies in its buffering and amplifying stages, simplifying circuit tweaks. The use of W20K log-rev.log potentiometers, popularized by the Tube Screamer, replicates the sweep found in actual HM-2 pedals. Linear or rev-logarithmic potentiometers are recommended if W20K isn’t available, with resistance values between 10k and 50k acceptable.

Op-Amp Variations: Small tonal distinctions exist among the op-amps used in this circuit. TL074 is the recommended choice for IC2, offering a cleaner response, while LM324 provides a slightly gnarlier character. However, both options offer plenty of sonic character.

Bloodletter by Unsound Circuity is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Boss HM-2, combining faithful replication with thoughtful enhancements for a versatile and customizable distortion experience.
