Schematics, circuits, PCBs and veroboards for guitar effects pedals.
The Blue Steel is a faithful adaptation of the Boss BD-2 overdrive pedal. It incorporates all the original circuit elements, including input and output buffers and power supply filtering. The flip-flop bypass circuitry has been removed for true bypass operation. It also adds a switch to select different amounts of low end, addressing a common complaint with the BD-2. The controls include volume, tone, and drive, which are typical for overdrive pedals. There is also a subs switch that allows you to choose between three preset low frequency ranges. The middle position is the stock BD-2 setting, the left position has twice as much bass, and the right position is very sub-heavy. The Blue Steel produces a unique timbre compared to other IC-based overdrives. It stands apart from its contemporaries by using differential pairs, dual-gang drive control, and a gyrator for tone shaping. The Blue Steel can be modified to match the Keeley specs, and the recommended changes are noted. Overall, the Blue Steel is a versatile overdrive pedal that faithfully reproduces the sound of the Boss BD-2 while offering additional features for tone shaping.
