The Crescent Amp Distortion is a highly regarded pedal that is based on the MI Audio Crunch Box. It is known for its high-gain “stack of amps” tone, similar to Marshall amplifiers. The Crescent is an adaptation of the Crunch Box, combining elements from the Marshall Guv’nor and Bluesbreaker pedals.
The Crescent has gone through several versions, with the fourth and fifth versions being renamed as the Super Crunch Box. While the Crescent is not a direct clone of any specific version, it incorporates features from multiple versions. It is most similar to version 3, but with added options for 18V operation and a clipping diode toggle switch, both of which were introduced in version 5.
The updated version of the Crescent retains most of the features of the earlier 1590B version. However, there are two major changes. Firstly, there is an internal slide switch that allows the user to select between 9V or 18V operation. Secondly, the Presence control has been relocated inside the enclosure as a trimmer, similar to the original Crunch Box units. The Presence control adjusts the range of the main tone control and does not need to be external.
The Crunch Box pedal served as the inspiration for another popular high-gain pedal, the Suhr Riot. Aion FX has created an adaptation of the Riot called the Fusion Distortion, which is available for those seeking a similar tone.
