The DZ4 Preamp pedal is a recreation of the highly sought-after “Mega” channel of the Deizel VH4 amplifier. This channel has been used by numerous hard rock, metal, and alternative bands since the 1990s. The pedal version, released in 2016, aims to capture the same feel and tone as the original amplifier’s third channel.
Designed as a true preamp, the DZ4 can be used to drive a power amp directly. However, it can also be used as a traditional drive pedal in combination with other pedals. The audio path of the VH4 pedal has been faithfully recreated in the DZ4, with some minor tweaks to enhance convenience and usability.
One of the changes is the power supply, which now supports a 9V input while delivering the required +/-12V as in the original circuit. This update ensures reliable operation and compatibility with standard pedal power supplies.
The handling of the two outputs has also been modified. Instead of having two separate output jacks, the DZ4 features a toggle switch that allows you to select between the standard pedal output (with attenuation and tone shaping) and a direct connection to a power amp. This eliminates the need to unplug cables when switching between the two output options.
Additionally, the bypass functionality has been improved. While the original pedal only had buffered bypass, the DZ4 now offers a true bypass/buffered bypass slide switch. This gives you the option to keep the buffer out of your signal path when the pedal is disengaged, preserving the integrity of your tone.
Overall, the DZ4 Preamp is a faithful adaptation of the VH4 pedal, with some quality-of-life tweaks to ensure seamless integration into your rig. Whether you’re looking for the iconic “Mega” channel tone or a versatile drive pedal, the DZ4 delivers the goods.
