E.S.V. Fuzz Silicon Version by Build Your Own Clone (BYOC)

The E.S.V. Fuzz Silicon Version is a kit based on the Fuzz Face pedal. It features vintage components like carbon comp resistors and axial leaded blue Vishay electrolytic caps. The kit also includes modern conveniences such as an LED status light, DC adapter jack, adjustable bias, and true bypass. The kit comes with a choice of NOS BC108 or BC109C transistors.

The main difference between silicon and germanium transistors is the sound. Germanium transistors have a darker, warmer, and woolier sound, while silicon transistors have more gain, sustain, and brightness. Germanium transistors can clean up with the guitar’s volume knob better than silicon transistors. However, silicon transistors have the advantage of not fluctuating in gain with temperature.

The BC108 and BC109C are both silicon transistors used in the Fuzz Face. The BC109C version has higher gain, resulting in more fuzz, sustain, and treble, but also more noise.

The kit can be built with either a positive or negative ground, but it is recommended to use a negative ground for compatibility with most power supplies. Positive ground pedals can still be powered by a negative tip power supply, but they cannot be daisy-chained with negative ground pedals unless all the pedals are positive ground. Power supplies with isolated outputs are needed to power both positive and negative ground devices simultaneously.
