The Eclipse Boost / Preamp is a pedal that replicates the preamp section of the Korg SDD-3000 digital delay, which was famously used by musicians like The Edge, Daniel Lanois, and William Orbit. While the SDD-3000 is a digital delay unit, the preamp section is fully analog and was often used in bypass mode to shape guitar tones.
The Eclipse Boost / Preamp in the 125B-format has a few improvements compared to the original unit. Firstly, the attenuation controls have been changed to 3-way toggle switches, which accurately emulate the functionality of the original unit. In the earlier version of the Eclipse, users had to approximate the attenuation level using knobs, which was not as precise.
Secondly, the input buffer, which was only engaged in the -30dB position of the original SDD unit, has been added to the Eclipse. However, it is now independently switchable, allowing it to be used with any attenuation setting.
Lastly, the updated version of the Eclipse uses a more advanced voltage converter to obtain a clean and quiet +/-15V power supply from a standard 9V source. The previous version supported either +/-15V or +/-9V power, but the +/-9V operation has been removed in the updated version.
Overall, these updates make the build of the Eclipse Boost / Preamp more straightforward and accurate to the original SDD-3000. It now provides an even more exact replica of the original unit’s bypass mode, allowing guitarists to achieve the same iconic tones as The Edge, Daniel Lanois, and other musicians who used the Korg SDD-3000.
