The Fractal Parametric Overdrive is a modern take on the Pearl OD-05 Over Drive pedal from the 80s. Despite its relative obscurity, those who have played through it praise its tonal flexibility. The pedal features a parametric equalizer that allows for adjustable boost or cut from 100 Hz to 4 kHz, providing a wide range of tonal possibilities.
The OD-05 has a standard feedback-diode clipping stage similar to a Tube Screamer, but its unique feature is the parametric equalizer that comes before it. This allows players to shape their tone by either cutting or boosting specific frequencies by up to 15dB. This flexibility enables players to achieve a variety of sounds, from a cocked-wah effect by cranking the mids, to enhancing the resonant peak of their guitar and amp combination.
One notable feature of the updated version of the Fractal Parametric Overdrive is the addition of a fixed post-clipping treble cut that can be dialed out for a slight treble boost. While the parametric EQ only affects a single frequency band, this additional control allows for some manipulation of a second frequency, albeit with reduced functionality. When turned to zero, the pedal functions identically to the stock circuit.
Overall, the Fractal Parametric Overdrive offers a unique and versatile overdrive experience with its parametric EQ and additional treble control. Despite its relative obscurity, it has garnered praise from those who have had the opportunity to play through it.
