Gaia Mk. II Preamp Drive by Aion FX

The Gaia Preamp Drive is a pedal that emulates the treble-boosted Vox AC30 tone made famous by Brian May of Queen. It is based on the Catalinbread Galileo, which combines a Rangemaster treble booster with an AC30.

The Galileo pedal was originally a combination of two other Catalinbread pedals, the Naga Viper and the CB30. The first version of the Galileo had separate controls and footswitches for both circuits. The second version was a redesign that reduced the pedal to 3 knobs: treble booster gain, tonestack treble, and master volume. The amp section’s gain control and bass knob were fixed internally.

The original Galileo used MPF4393 JFETs, which are no longer produced. Aion FX sells the original MPF4393 in sets of 5, but the PCB also has an extra pad for surface-mount JFETs (MMBF4393) that are still in production and perform the same.

The Gaia Mk. II is compatible with the 18V Voltage Doubler / Bypass module, which allows the circuit to be run at 18V without an external adapter. This higher voltage provides increased volume and clarity.

Note: There is no Gaia Mk. I project available currently, but a project based on the CB30 is in progress and will be released under that name.
