Germanium Tart by Fuzzdog

The Germanium Tart is a highly regarded overdrive pedal that is based on the TA-100, known for being used by notable musicians such as Ryan Adams, Radiohead, and Eagles of Death Metal. While it may not live up to all the hype, it is still considered to be a pretty good pedal. One of the unique aspects of the Germanium Tart is its setup, which uses three PNP cans in a negative-ground circuit. This configuration produces a rich and warm break-up that closely resembles the sound of a tube amplifier. To enhance the versatility of the pedal, trimmers have been added to allow users to bias the transistors to their preference. Additionally, the values of two of the pots have been tweaked to improve their response. The original linear pots for Gain and Tone had all the adjustment concentrated at one extreme end of the turn, so they have been replaced with a reverse log pot for Gain and a log pot for Tone, which provide a much better adjustment range. The gain control is still somewhat concentrated, but it is more usable. The kit for the Germanium Tart includes a set of germanium transistors of various types, typically of Russian origin, with the correct hFE (gain) for the circuit. However, if you already have your own transistors, you can choose to purchase the kit without them.
