Halo Distortion / Sustainer by Aion FX

The Halo Distortion/Sustainer is a recreation of the iconic Electro-Harmonic Big Muff Pi pedal, which was first released in 1969. While it is often categorized as a fuzz effect, it is actually a unique blend of distortion and fuzz with long sustain. Over the years, Electro-Harmonix has made subtle changes to the circuit, resulting in around 20 notable variants and numerous minor variations.

Building the Big Muff is relatively straightforward, as there are no complex biasing or gain sorting processes involved, and no rare or specialized parts are required. This makes it a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts and a great way to learn about audio circuits. The Halo faithfully recreates the Big Muff, allowing builders to replicate any standard variant by substituting a few parts. A versions spreadsheet is available to guide builders in selecting the appropriate parts for specific flavors of the Big Muff, such as the Triangle, Ram’s Head, Civil War, and more.

In addition to the stock mid-scoop tone, the Halo includes a midrange switch that offers a flat midrange response or a boosted midrange. This allows for greater versatility and ensures that the pedal can cut through the mix when needed. The mid-scoop tone is identical to the original Big Muff circuit, providing the classic sound that has made the pedal so beloved by guitarists for over 50 years.
