The Humble Overdrive is a DIY preamp designed by Bajaman at the Free Stompboxes forum. It is equipped with 3 switches – BRIGHT, MID BOOST and JAZZ/ROCK – and 8 potentiometers – LEVEL, OD-LEVEL, OD-GAIN, GAIN, PRESENCE, TREBLE, MIDS and BASS. The BRIGHT switch adds sparkle to the sound, while the MID BOOST switch helps cut through dense mixes. The JAZZ/ROCK selector allows the user to emphasize either the lower frequencies for jazz or the upper frequencies for rock. The LEVEL and OD-LEVEL knobs control the volume of each channel, while the GAIN and OD-GAIN knobs control the saturation. The EQ section has separate knobs for each frequency section, and the PRESENCE knob is a filter placed after the overdrive section. It affects the mids and high frequencies, and can be used to make the tone warmer or more in-your-face. The Humble Overdrive is a great choice for guitarists looking to achieve the tones of legends like John Mayer or Robben Ford. It works well with both strats and les pauls, and is based on a classic amp.
