Magic Missile by Electronic Audio Experiments

This is a unique fuzz/drive pedal that utilizes six transistors to create unusual sounds at extreme settings. It draws inspiration from the Escobedo/Devi Ever lineage of transistor fuzz pedals. The design incorporates a PNP/NPN clipping cell that shuts off the waveform at the peak of each cycle, resulting in a frequency “doubling” effect.

The pedal offers a wide range of transistor drive and fuzz tones, with the input capacitor blend allowing for further customization of the character. It can also achieve lower gain settings effectively. At maximum settings, the pedal produces a variety of unconventional harmonics due to the NPN/PNP cell.

There is a particular condition where the clipping cell generates an octavia-style fuzz at high gain settings, but this effect is not dependent on beta or base-emitter voltages and has not been successfully replicated. The best results were obtained using a 2n2219A/2n2905A transistor pair, which is functionally similar to the 2n2222/2n2907 transistors.
