The Pale Horse is a versatile overdrive pedal with a range of controls that allow for a wide variety of tones. The TONE control is an active boost/cut for frequencies above a set threshold, with a stock setting at 3.2kHz. The FREQ control is an internal trimpot that can be adjusted to make the tone control function as a treble boost/cut or a presence boost/cut. The DRIVE control sets the gain in the drive section, ranging from clean boost to high gain saturation. The LEVEL control adjusts the output level of the pedal.
The IMPEDANCE control, which is adjusted via an internal trimpot, sets the input impedance. Lower input impedances provide a more dynamic response to the guitar’s volume knob, while higher impedances add sparkle to the top end. The COMP control uses Variable HCC technology to transition between a sweet, asymmetrical drive tone (counterclockwise) and a dynamic mosfet drive (clockwise), with a clean boost mode at the 12:00 center detent position.
The HIGH control is a post-gain treble cut that can be used to smooth out the tone or add bright top end. The LOW control is a pre-gain bass cut that can tighten up the bottom end for added punch or provide a thicker, full-range drive. The Pale Horse is also bass-friendly.
The pedal features Variable HCC circuitry, which allows for fine-tuning of harmonics, compression, and clipping characteristics. Overall, the Pale Horse offers a unique and wide-ranging overdrive that can cover a lot of tonal bases.
