The Harmonic Percolator is a rare and sought-after fuzzbox that has gained renewed interest in recent years. It has been cloned by a few companies, with slight variations in component values. The 2018 version of the Pepper Spray is essentially the same as the “Steve Albini” Percolator.
The Albini version is smoother and more controlled, with a slightly over-compressed fuzz tone when the Harm control is turned all the way up. It is more aggressive than a FuzzFace and has unique characteristics. On the other hand, the Stock version is more unruly, with a very over-compressed sound and more noise compared to the Albini version.
The controls on the Harmonic Percolator are as follows:
– HARM: Sets the input level of the effect.
– BAL: Sets the volume output.
– CLIP: Toggle between the stock 1n695 clipping diodes and your choice of diodes.
– T1: Instead of the stock 4k7 resistor, T1 is a 10k trimmer that allows you to adjust the amount of clipping symmetry. Turning it up makes it more asymmetrical, while turning it down makes it fully symmetrical. For the stock sound, set T1 at or just below halfway.
