Peppermill by Aion FX

The Peppermill is a drive pedal that aims to replicate the tube-like clipping characteristics of a J201 JFET. It is a simple circuit consisting of a MOSFET gain-boost stage into a JFET. The gain can be adjusted between the two stages to control the amount of clipping, and there is an output volume control at the end.

The Aion FX version of the Peppermill adds a tone control to the original circuit. This is achieved by making the resistor value adjustable in the R-C lowpass filter right before the volume control. This allows for a useful tone shaping capability without affecting the original circuit.

To make the J201 JFET more accessible to DIY hobbyists who may be intimidated by SMD parts, Aion FX offers J201s in SMD format that have been pre-soldered to adapters. This allows them to be used as through-hole parts, which are more commonly used in DIY projects.

Overall, the Peppermill is a super-simple drive pedal that showcases the tube-like clipping characteristics of the J201 JFET, with the Aion FX version adding a tone control for additional versatility.
