Based On: Tone Bender Mk III

Phobos Germanium Fuzz by Aion FX

The Phobos Germanium Fuzz is a clone of the Colorsound / Sola Sound Tone Bender Mk III, a fuzz pedal that was popular in the late 1960s. The Mk III version of the Tone Bender was a departure from the earlier versions, featuring a different circuit design and the addition of a tone control.

The Phobos project includes a voltage inverter, allowing the pedal to be powered by a standard center-negative adapter while still maintaining the positive-ground operation of the original. This is a convenient feature that eliminates the need for a specialized power supply.

The PCB also includes biasing trim pots, which allow for easy adjustment of the bias without the need to swap out resistors. This allows users to dial in the perfect bias for their specific setup, resulting in optimal performance and tone.

In addition to the original Colorsound / Sola Sound unit, there were several licensed and unofficial variations of the Mk III Tone Bender, including the Vox Tone Bender, Park Fuzz Sound, Elka Dizzytone, and Prescription Electronics Yard Box. All of these variations can be built on the Phobos PCB.

Overall, the Phobos Germanium Fuzz project offers a faithful recreation of the iconic Mk III Tone Bender, with added features for convenience and customization. Whether you’re a vintage gear enthusiast or a modern guitarist looking for a classic fuzz tone, the Phobos is a great choice.
