The Quark Vintage Overdrive is a pedal that is based on the Maxon OD-880, which was originally released in 1976. The Maxon OD-880 was a popular overdrive pedal in Japan, particularly favored by Char, a well-known guitarist in the country. Despite its popularity in Japan, the Maxon OD-880 never gained much recognition outside of the country.
The Quark Vintage Overdrive is a clone of the Maxon OD-880, with a few additional features. It includes a clipping toggle that allows the user to switch between three different sets of diodes, providing different clipping options for the overdrive sound. It also has an EQ switch that engages a second mode with increased gain and more bass, giving the user more tonal options.
One notable difference between the Maxon OD-880 and the Quark Vintage Overdrive is the addition of a Treble switch in the Quark. The Maxon OD-880 lacked a tone control, but the Quark Vintage Overdrive includes a Treble switch that allows the user to select between three different post-clipping hi-cut modes, giving them control over the high-frequency content of the overdrive sound.
Overall, the Quark Vintage Overdrive is a faithful clone of the Maxon OD-880, with some added features that enhance its versatility and flexibility. It is an interesting pedal from a historical perspective, as it represents a transitional stage between the MXR Distortion+ and the Boss OD-1 OverDrive, and played a role in the development of the Tube Screamer pedal.
