The Redshift Deluxe Phaser offers a wide range of tonal possibilities with its various switches and knobs. It is a clone of the Blackout Effectors Whetstone Phaser, which was based on the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone. The Whetstone made improvements to the original Small Stone design, including additional controls and switches, an output gain boost, and a replacement of the obsolete OTA chip.
The Redshift retains most of the features of the Whetstone but makes a few changes. The 4-position rotary control for Range has been replaced with a 3-position toggle switch, and the “Fix” mode has been removed. The Fix mode in the original Whetstone produced high-pitched oscillation in the lower half of the rotation, which was not very usable in practice. The removal of this mode allows for a smaller and more cost-effective toggle switch.
Additionally, the Redshift adds a new feature not found in the original Whetstone. It includes a second set of Rate/Range controls for LFO speed and a footswitch to switch between two presets. This feature provides an additional effect with the press of a footswitch, although it does not offer a gradual speed change like a Leslie speaker.
Overall, the Redshift Deluxe Phaser offers a versatile and expanded tonal palette compared to the original Whetstone, with the added convenience of preset switching.
