Somnus Amp Distortion by Aion FX

The Somnus Amp Distortion is a pedal that offers medium-gain distortion and overdrive effects. It features a two-band Baxandall tone stack, which allows for precise control over the bass and treble frequencies.

Originally released in 1995 as the Sobbat DB-01 Drive Breaker, the pedal gained popularity through its association with The Edge, the guitarist of U2. The Edge used the pedal extensively during the recording of U2’s album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind,” particularly on the song “New York.” It was also used on the outro solo for “Until the End of the World” during the Elevation and Vertigo tours.

The Sobbat DB-01 Drive Breaker has since been followed by three updated versions: the DB-2, DB-3, and DB-4. However, these newer versions have not been extensively studied or analyzed. The original DB-01 remains the most well-known and is still in production, along with its successors.

The Somnus Amp Distortion is based on the first version of the Sobbat Drive Breaker. It is a faithful adaptation of the original pedal, with the addition of a clipping diode switch. The original unit uses one diode in each direction for clipping, but the Somnus offers options for two diodes or LEDs, allowing for further customization of the distortion and overdrive tones.
