The Southern Lights Drive is a new overdrive pedal that was released in August ’23. It is based on the Southlands, Lightspeed, and Black Mountain pedals. The makers claim that it is the best overdrive on the market, but we’ll try to provide a more objective description. The pedal is built upon the 186,272Mps Drive, but with additional research and development, an extra clipping stage and some component value changes have been made to create a unique take on the Tube Screamer. It offers a really nice sound, similar to its sibling pedal, but without the mid hump typically associated with Tube Screamers. It also has a bit more gain than the 186,272Mps Drive. The added clipping stage gives the Southern Lights Drive a different character, making it a distinct option from its predecessor. This means that there may be room for both pedals in a setup, depending on your preferences. The PCB for this pedal can actually be used to build either the Southern or Dark Hills variants. Once the 186,282Mps boards run out, they will be retired. Therefore, if you want to build the 186,282Mps Drive, you should purchase the specific kit for that.Overall, the Southern Lights Drive offers a nice sounding overdrive with some unique features, making it a versatile option for guitarists.
