Super Fuzz – Univox / Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz FY6 by Fuzzdog

The Super Fuzz – Univox / Shin-Ei Companion Fuzz FY6 is a high-gain octave-up fuzz pedal. It is based on the SuperFuzz FY6 made by Shin-Ei in the 70s. This pedal is known for its massive and uncompromising fuzz tone. There are different versions of this fuzz box, but the most famous ones are the FY6 by Shin-Ei and the Super Fuzz by Univox. If you’re looking for a wall-of-guitar sound like Pete’s Live at Leeds or a thicker tone like Poison Ivy’s, this pedal is a great choice. There is some debate about the best transistors to use in this circuit, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference. After extensive testing and comparison, the FuzzDog lab found that 6 x 2N5088 transistors produced the desired high-gain results. However, you can also use 2N2222 or BC107 transistors to tame the fuzz a bit if desired. The PCB (printed circuit board) of this pedal features a trim pot that allows you to dial in the octave signal to your liking. There is also an optional board-mounted diode selection switch and spots for two sets of clipping diodes. It’s important to note that this circuit is not quiet. The massive gain of the pedal results in some inevitable hiss and fizz. While it’s not excessive, you may experience some hiss when the amp is cranked and the strings are muted.
