The Thunderbird is an original distortion pedal inspired by a cranked Marshall Super Lead amp. It is designed to capture the magic tone of the amp in a pedal form. The circuit of the Thunderbird has been developed with a focus on flexibility and tone, using audio-quality op-amps and avoiding op-amp clipping. The pedal operates at a higher supply voltage of 24 Vdc and uses readily available diodes for overdrive/clipping.
The Thunderbird features a three-position switch that allows for three tonal options: NORMAL, BRIGHT, and a mix of the two for extra body. The TONE control varies continuously between these options, and its frequency response remains unchanged as the GAIN pot position is changed. The pedal also incorporates asymmetric clipping, with different clipping thresholds and strengths for positive and negative signals. This is achieved through a simple but effective analog circuit that requires a high dynamic range.
In addition to the tonal options and asymmetric clipping, the Thunderbird offers powerful toneshaping controls. The BOTTOM control adds bass boost centered around 100 Hz, while the TOP control adds treble boost centered around 6000 Hz. Boosting both controls creates a scooped mids response, ideal for rock sounds. The pedal also includes a PRESENCE control for additional top-end control.
