Schematics, circuits, PCBs and veroboards for guitar effects pedals.
Instead, we have reverse-engineered the circuitry of the original Traynor TS-50B bass amp and recreated it in pedal form. The TS-50 Bass Preamp captures the unique drive tone of the TS-50B, allowing bass players to achieve that signature grinding sound in a compact and portable pedal.
The pedal features a basic topology at the beginning of the circuit, but things get interesting after the tone stack. The signal is split into three bands – low, medium, and high – and each band is run into a pair of PNP transistors that distort the bands separately. These distorted bands are then combined back together, creating the distinctive drive tone of the TS-50B.
The key innovation in the TS-50B’s circuitry is the Tri-Comp Network, invented by Traynor’s lead engineer Eric Von Valtier. This network was designed to round out the harsh square waves typically associated with bass distortion, creating a unique waveform that resembled a sine wave but with a jagged clipping effect occurring within the waveform itself.
While the TS-50 Bass Preamp shares similarities with the Tronographic Rusty Box, it is not directly based on that pedal. Instead, our pedal is based on the original Traynor TS-50B bass amp, ensuring an authentic recreation of its iconic drive tone.
Whether you’re a fan of Bob Weston, Steve Albini, David Wm. Sims, or simply seeking a pedal that can deliver a unique and revered bass drive tone, the TS-50 Bass Preamp is a must-have addition to your rig.
