The UBE Screamer is a guitar pedal that is a CMOS implementation of the Tube Screamer. It is based around the CD4049UBE logic IC, which provides a softer and more moderate clipping compared to opamps. The gain control on the UBE Screamer is very wide, ranging from clean to light overdrive to full distortion. The tone control allows for great control over the sound, with the ability to pass the signal nearly unfiltered at maximum setting.
The circuit of the UBE Screamer can be dissected as follows:
– The input buffer provides unity gain and an input impedance similar to a TS.
– The audio is divided into two paths, one for distortion and one for clean. Both paths are mixed at the end of the circuit.
– The distortion path includes filtering with a low corner frequency of 718 Hz, while the clean path is not affected by this filtering.
– The gain is obtained through two series amps, with the first stage avoiding clipping and the second stage providing most of the gain.
– The tone section is implemented as an inverting 2nd order low pass filter, with a cutoff frequency that can be varied between 1 kHz and 10 kHz.
Possible modifications to the UBE Screamer include changing the clipping diodes and adjusting the high-pass filtering components on the distortion path. The Rx resistor can be replaced with a trimmer or pot for further customization. Additionally, adjusting the Vdd resistor can affect the overall sonic quality of the circuit, and a pot can be installed to control circuit starvation if desired.
