Woodstork’21 by Madbeanpedals

The Woodstork offers the option of using axial caps. However, it should be noted that the supply of pre-tested PNP germanium transistors suitable for fuzzes is dwindling, which may be a barrier for novice builders.

The controls on the Woodstork’21 include:

– VOL: Controls the effect output level.
– FUZZ: Best sound is achieved when fully clockwise for maximum fuzz. The use of a 1kC (reverse audio) instead of 1kB gives the control more range.
– BIAS: CCW adds series resistance to the input, while CW is the stock Fuzz Face setting. The Bias and Fuzz controls interact with each other. Lower settings on both controls result in lower gain fuzz without muddiness.
– CONT: The contour control adds volume to the output. Increasing the stock resistor value provides more volume and a slightly more aggressive fuzz tone.
– T1: This trimmer is used to bias the Q2 collector.

It is important to note that the Woodstork’21 is a negative ground effect that creates a positive ground supply. This means that a 9V center tip negative power supply can still be used, but within the circuit, the charge pump inverts the supply voltage to its negative counterpart. This is done to achieve a stable circuit suitable for PNP germaniums. The wiring is the same as any negative ground effect.
