The Xenotron Modulation Machine is a recreation of the Lovetone “?” Flange With No Name, which is known for its unique and otherworldly sounds. It was the last effect designed by Lovetone before they stopped production, making it the rarest of their effects.
The “?” Flange With No Name is often referred to as a flanger, but it is more complex than that. It has two primary modulation functions: Space (optical tremolo) and Time (BBD-driven flange, chorus, doubling, and pseudo-phasing). These can be used in stereo or summed to mono for a wide range of hybrid tones.
The real magic of the Xenotron lies in its array of knobs and added features. The “Action” and “Reaction” controls work with in-phase and out-of-phase copies of the signal, allowing for addition or subtraction from the signal. It also has an optional effects loop for external effects, a CV input, and external triggering, allowing for unique sounds that are unparalleled in the world of guitar effects.
The design of the Xenotron is also noteworthy. It uses a minimal number of ICs, with most of the circuitry driven by transistors and JFETs. This design philosophy challenged the designer, Dan Coggins, to do it the hard way without the convenience of op-amps.
The Xenotron is a faithful recreation of the Flange With No Name, but in a smaller package. The layout has been optimized for ease of building, and a comprehensive 30-page build document has been provided. However, it is still a challenging project and not recommended for beginners.
Due to the complexity of operation, the original Lovetone user manual has been recreated as a separate document. It is important to refer to the manual when using the Xenotron to fully understand its controls and functionality.
Special thanks to Ian, the DIY community’s resident Lovetone expert, for verifying the Xenotron prototype against an original Flange With No Name for accuracy.
