The Zelus Distortion/Sustainer takes these adaptations from the Musket Fuzz version 2 and adds a few modifications of its own. First, it includes an input boost inspired by the Electro-Harmonix LPB-1, allowing for increased drive and saturation. This boost can push the input harder than the initial gain stage of a stock Big Muff.
Second, the Zelus includes a “Focus” control that blends in a higher capacitor value, allowing for more bass to come through before the clipping stages. This feature makes the Zelus particularly well-suited for bass guitar, as it can provide a thick and powerful low-end response.
Lastly, the Zelus incorporates a “Midrange” control on the treble side of the rotation. This control gradually blends in another capacitor in parallel with the stock tone capacitor, altering the frequency response of that side. It’s important to note that if the tone control is turned all the way to the bass side (counter-clockwise), the Midrange control will have minimal effect.
These enhancements make the Zelus a unique and modern take on the Big Muff circuit, while still retaining the vintage character that is beloved by many guitarists. The added input boost, bass blend, and midrange control provide greater versatility and allow for a wider range of tones to be achieved. Whether you’re looking for classic Big Muff fuzz or a more modern and aggressive distortion, the Zelus Distortion/Sustainer has you covered.
