The Aphelion Vintage Distortion is a clone of the MXR Distortion+ and DOD 250, two iconic drive pedals from the 1970s. These pedals were among the first to use op-amps and hard diode-to-ground clipping, making them pioneers in the world of drive circuits.
The MXR Distortion+ was released in 1973 and became popular among guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Jerry Garcia, and Thom Yorke. It has a simple circuit with no tone control, but the gain control also affects the tone, cutting the bass frequencies and giving the perceived effect of increasing treble.
DOD released their version, the Overdrive Preamp 250, in 1976. This pedal is closely associated with Yngwie Malmsteen. Like the Distortion+, it had various circuit tweaks throughout its manufacturing run, resulting in different variants.
The Aphelion Vintage Distortion adds two modifications to the classic two-knob circuit. It includes a treble-cut switch that changes a capacitor at the input, allowing for tonal variations. It also features a diode selector that lets you choose between germanium (Distortion+), silicon (250), or LEDs, giving you different clipping options.
Overall, the Aphelion Vintage Distortion pays homage to these classic drive pedals while adding some extra versatility and customization options.
