Azabache by runoffgroove.com

The Azabache is an original overdrive pedal inspired by classic Fender amps. It features a flexible and effective Tone control that can vary the sound from fat and warm to thin and bright. The pedal also includes two switches: a Bright switch that adds a glassy character to the sound, and a Scoop switch that reduces the midrange for more clarity. The different switch combinations produce four distinct modes: Blonde, Brown, Silver, and Black.

The Gain knob on the Azabache allows for adjustment of the sound from almost clean to a medium overdrive. Each stage is designed to produce a moderate amount of gain without hard clipping in the JFET itself. This results in a refined overdrive with a natural note decay that reacts well to the guitar’s volume knob.

The tone shaping at the end of the circuit is modeled after the frequency response of a Jensen P10R speaker, with its bright tone and deep 400 Hz notch. This part of the circuit is referred to as a mini-Condor Cab Sim, as it replicates the frequency response of the Condor but takes into account that another amp and guitar speaker will follow afterwards.

Overall, the Azabache pedal is optimized for solid-state amps that are moderately bright. It is recommended to use metal film resistors for best noise performance and to replace the drain trimpots with fixed resistors once the necessary value is determined. Good wiring and shielding techniques are also encouraged for optimal performance.
