The Britannia is an original overdrive pedal inspired by the Vox AC-30 Top Boost amp. It has been optimized for playing into a clean solid-state amp. The pedal features a high impedance input stage, a treble booster section, and a voltage follower driving a slightly modified version of the original tonestack. It also includes an op-amp that provides soft overdrive and toneshaping capabilities.
Knobs:
– Gain: Adjusts the level of crunch and overdrive.
– Bass: Controls the amount of low-frequency content.
– Treble: Balances the high and low frequencies for clarity.
– Brilliance: Adjusts the level of top-end frequencies.
– Resonance: Adds a 200 Hz resonance characteristic of a 2×12″ cabinet.
– Cut (labeled as Brilliance): Provides additional gain and toneshaping.
To dial in your desired tone, start with the Bass and Treble knobs at 12 o’clock, Brilliance at maximum, and adjust the Gain for your desired level of crunch. Then, tune the Bass for the desired amount of low-frequency content and the Treble for clarity and balance between high and low frequencies. Reduce Brilliance as needed to achieve your desired top-end level. Repeat these steps if necessary.
If you want to use a treble booster at the input of Britannia, like Brian May did with the AC-30 Normal channel, start with the Bass control at maximum, Treble control at minimum, and Brilliance control at noon. Adjust the Gain to your liking and fine-tune the sound with the Bass, Treble, and Brilliance controls. Using a flat or full-frequency booster in front of Britannia can also produce interesting sounds.
