The Emerald Resonant Phaser is a modified version of the BOSS PH-1r Phaser pedal, which was released in 1980. The PH-1r is an updated version of the original PH-1 pedal, one of the first three pedals released by BOSS in 1977. The PH-1r introduced a frequency-dependent feedback control called “resonance” or “regen,” which enhances the phase effect by mixing some of the phased output back to an earlier stage. This increases the midrange resonance and adds more color to the effect.
The Emerald Resonant Phaser is a faithful replica of the PH-1r, with the addition of true bypass and a volume control. The true bypass feature ensures that the pedal does not affect the guitar signal when it is turned off. The volume control allows the user to adjust the output level of the pedal to match the unity gain, regardless of the settings.
The PH-1r uses four matched 2SK30A-GR JFETs for the phase stages. These JFETs are similar to the 2N5457 but not identical. Aion FX offers matched 2SK208-GR JFETs, which are the surface-mount version of the 2SK30A and are still in production. These JFETs are pre-soldered to through-hole adapter PCBs, making them easy to use even for those without surface-mount soldering experience.
