The Emperor Dual Overdrive is a pedal that is based on the popular King of Tone overdrive pedal. It takes the classic Blues Breaker circuit and adds some modifications to enhance its sound. The pedal features two circuits in one box, allowing for versatile tone shaping. To ensure a clean and organized layout, all components of the pedal are mounted on the circuit board, except for the jacks and DC socket. This design choice makes the pedal neat and compact. There has been much debate about the importance of the ‘magic’ diodes in these circuits. The Emperor Dual Overdrive now uses BA282 diodes instead of the hard-to-find MA856, and 1N4148 diodes instead of 1S1588. These diodes have similar characteristics, so there is no difference in tone. The pedal also offers an optional 18V charge pump on board. Each circuit can be individually switched for 9 or 18V operation, allowing for more or less headroom. You can choose to have mini slide switches or omit the charge pump altogether. In the original King of Tone, the presence control is adjusted internally with trimmers. However, the Emperor Dual Overdrive gives you the option to have external pots for the presence control. This modification makes a noticeable difference in tone, making the extra knobs worthwhile. Due to the addition of these pots, the control layout deviates slightly from the original. If you choose the 8-pot layout, everything is centered. However, if you opt for external presence controls, the Tone pots will be towards the edge of the box, below the Gain and Volume knobs. If you prefer to center the Tone pots, you can bend their legs out of the way and wire them to the PCB without causing any harm. When ordering the pedal, you can choose from three enclosure options. Type A is for all pots to be external, Type B is for internal presence and board-mounted Tone pots, and Type C is for bending the Tone pot legs and wiring them up. Choose the option that suits your preferences.
