Grace / Big Daddy by runoffgroove.com

The Grace/Big Daddy guitar pedal is a distortion pedal that is based on the LM386 audio power amp chip. It was designed to produce great distortion sounds and is inspired by other successful 386-based designs such as the Smash Drive, Stupidity Box, and Smokey Amp. One potential downside of the 386 designs is the low input impedance, which can cause some loading of the guitar signal and result in high-end signal loss. To address this issue, a high impedance buffer was added before the 386 chip. This buffer, which uses a Jfet and a 4M7 gate resistor, helps to alleviate the loading effect and increases the sparkle in the signal.

The Grace/Big Daddy pedal also features a gain control that allows for variable gain settings. A simple 1k potentiometer is wired as a variable resistor between pins 1 and 8 of the 386 chip. By adjusting this potentiometer, the gain can be varied from the normal condition of 20X gain to a maximum of 200X gain when the potentiometer is set to minimum resistance. This provides flexibility in shaping the distortion sound to suit individual preferences.
