The Hypercube Fuzz/Distortion is a pedal that is based on the BOSS FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz from 1993. While the original FZ-2 was not successful during its initial release, it has gained popularity in recent years as a rare cult classic. The Hypercube is an exact replica of the FZ-2 in terms of its effect mode, with the only difference being the conversion of the buffered bypass to true bypass.
The pedal features a 3-way toggle switch that allows you to select between Fuzz I (flat) and Fuzz II (scooped) tone modes. It also includes a third mode called Gain Boost, which bypasses the middle fuzz stages and connects the boost directly to the active tone stack for a cleaner tone shaping option. Unlike the original circuit, the Hypercube preserves the output volume functionality across all three positions of the toggle switch.
It is important to note that the assembly of this pedal is different from most DIY builds, and there are specific instructions in the build documentation that need to be followed to avoid mistakes that may be difficult to fix. Familiarizing yourself with the assembly instructions before installing any components is highly recommended.
