The L5 Preamp Clean Channel pedal is a faithful recreation of the first channel of the Lab Series L5 amplifier. It features a passive tone stack inspired by Fender, with scaled values to match the lower impedance of the L5 amp. While commonly referred to as the clean channel, it can also produce its own drive tones when pushed.
The pedal includes optional modifications to extend the drive range and make it easier to achieve overdriven tones. It responds well to a boosted input signal, especially when combined with the built-in compressor to even out dynamics.
BB King is perhaps the most famous user of the L5’s clean channel, showcasing its versatility and quality. The pedal recreates the entire preamp signal path of the clean channel, including the OTA overdrive, compressor, and master volume. It operates on the same +/-15V voltage as the original unit, with the only change being the conversion of the input stage from inverting to non-inverting to reduce noise.
For those interested in the drive channel of the Lab Series L5, a separate project is available. However, the full L5 Preamp pedal combines both channels for a complete recreation of the amplifier’s signal path.
