The Malacandra Boost / Overdrive is a versatile pedal that recreates the Xotic AC Booster, RC Booster, and Bass RC Booster. These pedals are known for their two-band EQ, allowing independent control of bass and treble frequencies.
The circuit of the Malacandra is similar to a Tube Screamer, starting with an input buffer and an op-amp feedback diode clipping stage. However, there are two major topological differences. Firstly, the AC/RC circuit uses an inverting op-amp stage for clipping, whereas the Tube Screamer is non-inverting. Secondly, the Tube Screamer’s tone control is replaced by a Baxandall stage with bass and treble controls in the AC/RC circuit.
The BB Preamp, also available from Aion FX as the Perelandra, is a similar circuit to the AC/RC Boosters. The main difference is that the BB Preamp retains the Tube Screamer’s tone control section, which is positioned between the clipping section and the Baxandall tone stack. This tone control is hard-wired at the 9:00 position.
Version 2 of the Malacandra has been updated based on direct traces of the current-production AC Booster, RC Booster, and Bass RC Booster. The Malacandra PCB allows you to build any of the three circuits by simply changing a few parts. The documentation provides instructions for each variant.
Overall, the Malacandra Boost / Overdrive is a flexible tone machine that can deliver clean volume boosts or thick overdrive, thanks to its two-band EQ and versatile circuit design.
