The Megalith Dual Drive is a pedal that combines the features of the ZVEX Box of Rock and Distortron pedals. It is composed of cascaded MOSFET boost stages, with a drive channel and boost channel that can be used independently or combined.
The Box of Rock was the first pedal released in 2006 and features three cascaded stages, with an additional SHO stage at the end for switchable volume boost. The Distortron, released in 2009 as part of the lower-cost “Vextron” series, omits the boost but adds two toggle switches for gain and bass settings.
By combining the Distortron’s gain and bass switches with the Box of Rock’s boost stage, the Megalith offers the best of both pedals. It is a touch-sensitive, low- to medium-gain pedal that overdrives naturally and responds well to the guitar’s volume knob.
The Box of Rock was designed as a 2-channel effect, with the SHO as the “always on” clean foundation and the drive channel added on top. The boost comes after the drive when both are engaged. However, this setup may not work with every rig.
To address this, the Megalith includes an internal slide switch that allows the order to be changed so that the boost comes before the drive. In this mode, the boost stacks with the drive and adds to the gain rather than just boosting the volume.
It’s important to note that the gain controls on the Megalith, both the main circuit gain and the boost level, exhibit the characteristic “crackle” of the SHO when adjusted. This is because they directly bias the MOSFETs and is considered normal.
