The Nimbus Dynamic Overdrive takes inspiration from the Maxon OD-820 Overdrive Pro and incorporates a dual drive/blend control from the Klon Centaur. It was released in 2001 as part of Maxon’s Vintage Series, which featured vintage-inspired designs with modern improvements.
Despite its name, the Vintage Series pedals were not reissues of vintage circuits. Instead, they were released in the same big-box enclosure style used in the 1970s but with all-new designs. The Maxon OD-820 Overdrive Pro, which the Nimbus is based on, shares similarities with the Klon Centaur in terms of its bipolar +/-9V charge pump and dual-pot “gain/blend” control. However, it is not a clone of the Klon Centaur.
The OD-820 is often compared to the Tube Screamer due to its clipping diodes and tone control. It is essentially the same circuit as the later VOP-9 Vintage Overdrive Pro, but with a larger enclosure to match the other Vintage Series effects. The VOP-9, on the other hand, is housed in the smaller standard Ibanez 9-series enclosure.
