The CS-3 is a compressor circuit that has been around for almost four decades. Unlike other compressors that use optical or transistor-based circuits, the CS-3 utilizes a high-quality Voltage Controlled Amplifier (VCA) to produce compression. The VCA has its own unique sound, which is not as colorful as optical compressors or as dynamic as some transistor-based compressors. However, it offers a very even response and seemingly endless sustain at high settings. The addition of an active tone control enhances the overall performance of the CS-3.
The original CS-3 used SIP op-amps and an older version of the THAT VCA. The updated version, called the Oracle, has been converted to use DIP op-amps with modern equivalents.
The CS-3 features four controls:
1. LVL: This control adjusts the output level of the compressor.
2. SUS: This control determines the amount of compression applied.
3. TONE: The active tone control allows for cut or boost of the tone.
4. ATTACK: This control regulates the amount of picking dynamics present in the compressed output, ranging from slow to fast response.
If you are a fan of compression, the CS-3 is a valuable addition to your collection. It offers a unique sound and excellent sustain, making it a worthy choice for compression enthusiasts.
