Plasma Vintage Drive by Aion FX

The Plasma Vintage Drive is a faithful reproduction of the Colorsound Overdriver, a popular boost/drive pedal from the 1970s. The original Overdriver was an updated version of the Power Booster, which ran on 18V using two batteries in series. The Overdriver dropped the need for the second battery and operated on a standard 9V supply.

The Plasma Vintage Drive retains the same circuit as the Overdriver but adds an output volume control. This allows users to adjust the gain according to their desired tone without being limited by the volume level. It’s worth noting that the Overdriver can produce a “splatty” sound at medium gain levels as the notes decay. This is a characteristic of transistor-based distortion and is considered normal.

The 125B version of the Plasma Vintage Drive differs from the original version by removing the Power Booster compatibility. Instead, the Power Booster is available as a separate circuit called the Nucleus, which includes an on-board charge pump for 18V operation. Additionally, the transistor bias trimmers have been removed in this revised version. It is no longer necessary to bias the transistors in the Overdriver circuit for proper functioning.
