The RRBB is a breadboard plug-in version of the Road Rage voltage converter utility. It is designed to plug directly into a breadboard setup and outputs different voltages commonly used in guitar pedals. It takes a standard unfiltered 9v input and outputs the following voltages: +9v filtered, +18v filtered, -9v filtered, and one adjustable output that ranges from about +16v to +1.2v.
The RRBB can be used with different charge pump ICs, such as MAX1044CPA, TC1044SCPA, TC7662BCPA, and LT1054. The first three provide about 20-30mA of output current for the converted voltages, while the LT1054 has about 100mA of output current for high current circuits.
The controls on the RRBB include a slide switch to set the position of pins 1 and 8 on the charge pump IC. For the LT1054, the switch should be set to the UP position, while for most other charge pumps, it should be set to the DOWN position. The T1 trimmer is used to set the positive voltage output on the ADJ pad, ranging from about +16v to about 1.2v.
If using the RRBB with the mbp ProtoRig, the Filter switch on the ProtoRig should be set to “Unfiltered”.
Overall, the RRBB is a versatile voltage converter utility that can be easily integrated into breadboard setups for guitar pedal prototyping.
