The Sapphire Amp Overdrive is a pedal that is based on the popular BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver. The BD-2 is known for its drive tone that resembles vintage Fender blackface amps and has been used by many well-known artists.
The BD-2 is built with a circuit that utilizes Boss’s “discrete op-amp” circuit topology, which includes two JFETs and a PNP transistor. This allows for a variable gain stage that can be controlled like an op-amp but clips gracefully when overdriven. The BD-2 also includes a slight bass boost and a fixed-position Fender tonestack for shaping the tone.
However, the BD-2 is not without its flaws. On higher gain settings, the note decay can be “fizzy” or “splatty”, and the bass boost may not always work well in every situation. Because of these shortcomings, the BD-2 is often modded, with Keeley’s and Analogman’s mods being popular choices. The Galaxie Mod from Machine Head Pedals is also highly recommended, as it completely transforms the pedal by replacing half of the passive components.
The Sapphire Amp Overdrive is based on the stock BD-2 circuit but converted to true bypass. It adds a bass knob that allows for variable low boost, so the user can adjust it between the stock value and the value of the Galaxie Mod.
The original BD-2 uses the 2SK184-GR JFET, which is no longer made in through-hole format. The SMD version, 2SK209-GR, is still in production and performs the same as the originals. The Sapphire Amp Overdrive includes extra pads for soldering SMD parts, but if the user is not confident in their SMD skills, they can purchase pre-soldered 2SK209-GR adapter boards from Aion FX for through-hole applications.
